An excellent place to begin your research is in the Reference Department on the first floor of MacPháidín. This is where you will find both general and subject-specific encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, etc. These resources are a good place to get background material on your topic. Remember that Reference materials need to be available to everyone; therefore, they do not circulate outside of the library.
