Tutoring Services: Research

A general guide to common questions about writing and grammar

Where do I begin?

Oftentimes, beginning the research process seems like the hardest part. To start your research, ask yourself

What type of information am I looking for?

Do I need to information on an historical event? A research study? A story from a newspaper?

How much information do you need?

A lengthy and detailed account of an event? Or just the basic facts. A detailed analysis of a research study? Or just the summary.

The MacPhaidin library offers a number of resources to assist you in finding what you need. The information you need to locate could be located in one of the following:

  • Books in both print and electronic format
  • Magazines articles
  • Scholarly journal articles
  • A Web site
  • Reference book such as a subject encyclopedias or a collection of statistics
  • Interlibrary loan service to obtain books and articles from other libraries
