eBooks in the MacPhaidin Library: iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touch

Information about how to obtain e-books in the MacPhaidin Library

Getting Started with Your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch

In order to start transferring PDF files to your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, you will need to make sure you are working from the computer in which you regularly sync your device.  This won't work from a public computer or lab computer.  Make sure your device is plugged in and you are authorized to sync and add apps.

You will need to make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and you have downloaded and installed the iBooks app successfully.

Once you have the software components, follow the steps below.

Adding PDFs to iTunes

Whether you have a PC or a Mac, the directions are essentially the same.

Open iTunes, click on File, and then click on Add File to Library:

Find the PDF you want to import, select it, and then select Open to continue:

Still in iTunes, click on the Books directory in the sidebar to make sure your PDF appears:

Moving PDFs From iTunes

Once you have your PDF imported into iTunes, there are two options:

  • If you have your device to automatically sync Books through iTunes, simply re-sync your device.
  • If you manually manage your e-books, continue reading:

Within your Books library of iTunes, click on the PDF file you want to transfer and drag and drop it into your device library:

To confirm that your PDF file has been moved succesfully to your device, click on the Books directory under your device and make sure it is there:

Using iBooks to View PDFs

After you've transferred your file, open iBooks on your device and tap Collections:

Tap PDFs to display the PDF collection:

Your PDF should display.  Feel free to use the library or list view to the right to your preference:

E-Book File Formats

If you're unsure of what e-book format is compatible with your personal e-reader, or if you want to know what devices you can use to read a particular file format, check out the Comparison of E-Book Formats from Wikipedia that details all formats available and covers virtually all devices.  Wikipedia is updated frequently, so check back often!

iPad Apps

There is a variety of e-reader apps available for the iPad.  Although you can purchase e-books through the iTunes store and read them on your iPad using the iBooks app, check out some other apps to expand your reading experience:
