JRN 101: The Fourth Estate Meets Web 2.0
Technological tools have revolutionized the way journalists report and disseminate news. iPads and tablets enable you to capture news as it happens. The facts and figures that can add perspective and depth to a story can often be found almost instantaneously through a well-executed Google search. Then, with a few clicks of a mouse, Web 2.0 applications such as YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr can allow you to share your story with the world.
This guide was designed to help you navigate a course in advanced news writing in this era of of-the-moment news reporting. Here, you will find links to sites that can add breadth to your reporting, tips on using an iPad and iMovie to create multi-media news stories, and links to some journalism sites that showcase some of journalists' finest work. Use the tabs at the top of the page to navigate your way through the resources. Below is a brief description of what you'll find on some of those pages.
Criminal Justice - This page will provide you with links to local, state and federal statistics about crime and punishment.
Education - Links on this page provide you with access to statistics about both state and federal educational programs, assessment efforts and school populations.
Health - Finding health information on line can be a particular challenge. Make sure the data you are using comes from reliable, reputable sources. This page will provide you with links to sites that can get you started on your search.
Government - Here you will find a lengthy, annotated list of local, state and federal government sites.
Legislative Television - State legislatures are going the C-Span route. this page will provide you access to legislative television sites.
Journalism Links - They Poynter Institute and the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism and the Pew Center for Civic Journalism have valuable information that can help inform your reporting and writing.
