Monitoring Chat: Reference Basics: Subject Guides

Use this guide to triage basic reference questions asked through the library's chat service.

Questions to ask the Patron

  • What is the topic that you're researching?
  • What class is this for?
  • What kind of sources do you need?

Selecting a Guide

A link to subject and course research guides can be found on the library's homepage.

Find the appropriate subject area, and select a guide from the list.  Some guides have been created to cater to specific courses and/or instructors.  If a course guide is not available, direct the student to the general guide for that discipline.

Use their initial question to guide them to the appropriate section of the guide.  Are they looking for books?  Articles?  Web resources?  Select from the top level tabs.
