NRC Backs Ecosystem-Wide Changes to Save Klamath FishIn one of the bitterest water disputes in the American West, federal biologists have tried to save three species of endangered fish by restricting how much water farmers can remove from waterways in the Klamath Basin along the Oregon-California border. But rebuilding fish populations will require a broader set of remedies, according to a report released 21 October by the National Research Council (NRC; see http://www.nap.edu/). Among the fixes, the report recommends considering tearing out dozens of small dams, restoring wetlands, altering logging practices, and refilling long-drained lakes.
