Welcome to HSC 350: Understanding Health Disparities. This course involves an exploration of the social factors that influence the distribution and treatment of illness in our society. The class will also include a critical examination of the U.S. health care system and the doctor-patient relationship in our society. In addition, we will explore factors that can influence an individual's risk for illness such as culture, race, socio-economic status, and the environment. You will be presented with cross-cultural views on a variety of health problems, and you will be expected to come prepared to think critically about these problems and to participate fully in class discussions. This course also includes a Writing in the Disciplines (WID) component, a Community-Based Learning Project, and satisfies Moral Inquiry and Social Science Inquiry requirements.
