Bibliographic Instruction: Books and eBooks

Use this guide to prepare for classroom bibliographic instruction and one-on-one research appointments.

Locating Books and eBooks Using HillSearch

Research assignments may require students to utilize scholarly monographs.  Books and eBooks are listed in HillSearch, the library's online catalog.  The HillSearch link is located under Useful Resources on the Library's homepage.  Demonstrating how to search HillSearch for print and electronic materials is often a necessary aspect of bibliographic instruction, whether in the classroom or in a one-on-one setting.

Searching in HillSearch is similar to searching in a database.  Enter a query into the search bar, and press Enter.  If the list of results is too numerous, limiters (like those found in databases) can be applied from the left-side navigation menu.  The screenshot below highlights the Format limiter, which allows users to limit their results to print books, eBooks, DVDs, or online streaming media.

Records for print books and physical items will list their locations in the library.  Electronic items, such as eBooks and streaming videos, can be accessed via a link that will take the user directly to the item.  Once there, users can read the book or watch the video online.
