SLP 101 - Intro to Human Communication Disorders: C. Vail

Your Assignment

Individual or Paired Project

Students will select a diagnosis related to a disorder covered in class.  Students can work alone or in a group of 2.  The project has four components:

1. Research Paper. This APA-formatted paper will be 8-10 pages long and contain at least five references.  These references must include at least one peer-reviewed journal article. Other sources may include the textbook, course reserves, other texts of the student's choosing, or reliable internet sources.

The content of the paper should include a title page, introduction, description of the disorder, causes and subtypes (as applicable), and the clinical manifestation of symptoms with emphasis on speech-, language-, and hearing-related impairments. The paper should also include a description of the speech-language pathologist's and/or audiologist's role in the assessment and treatment of the condition, a conclusion, and a references page.  If working in pairs, the paper must flow as one cohesive project, and work must be distributed equally.

2. Class Presentation. This presentation will be 15-20 minutes long. Although there is flexibility with regard to the structure and content of the presentation, it will likely consist of a PowerPoint presentation that highlights the main sections of the research paper.  Consideration should be given to multimedia enhancements (e.g., YouTube clips, interviews with individuals or parents or individuals with the condition, etc.). Presentations will be given in person, in class, and may be recorded on Zoom for students needing to attend virtually and/or for grading purposes.

3. Meeting with the Instructor. Students or pairs of students are required to meet with the instructor at least two weeks prior to their presentation date in order to discuss their plan for their topic.  Students must initiate the request for this meeting; failure to do so will result in a 3-point grade deduction.

4.  Exam Questions. Students will thoughtfully prepare three exam questions on their disorder.  These questions can take any format (e.g., multiple choice, short answer, etc.) and may or may not be used by the instructor for the tests or final exam.
