Natural Scientific Inquiry

Overview

The primary goal of the Natural Scientific Inquiry Requirement is to equip students with some basic tools to address issues involving science so that they can make informed decisions about the impact of science and regulatory policies on their lives and eventually become more active and engaged citizens.

Natural Scientific Inquiry Learning Outcomes

Key Outcomes:

  • Scientific Method. Given a hypothesis, students should be able to design experiments and interpret data according to the scientific method.
  • Paradigm shifts. Students should be able to describe evolutionary and revolutionary shifts in science (as they relate to the topics covered in the course).
  • Limitations of science. Students should be able to determine which questions can or cannot legitimately be addressed by the scientific process.
  • Assessment of scientific claims. Students should be able to evaluate the validity of a scientific claim.
  • Science Information Literacy. Students should be able to distinguish primary literature from other accounts and should be able to demonstrate the ability to find, read, and explain primary scientific literature on a particular topic.

Evidence of Student Learning

Student learning outcomes will be evaluated through written assignments, laboratory assignments, research projects, oral presentations, examinations, and participation in class activities and discussions.
