2024 Richard "Dick" Grant Staff Award for Jennifer Connelly

December 2024 / Employee Christmas Party

Every year, a staff member who has gone above and beyond their role at Stonehill College is recognized at the annual Employee Christmas party. Named in honor of the former Associate Dean of Academic Achievement, library staff were overjoyed to hear that the prestigious Richard “Dick” Grant Award for 2024 was awarded to our very own Jennifer Connelly!

Jen, a graduate of the Class of 1994, is one of our Access Services Associate & Interlibrary Loan staff. She has been a library staff member for the past 27 years! As the face of MacPhaidin Library's main desk, her exemplary service, proactive temperament, and buoyant personality has benefited each and every student, faculty, custodian, colleague, and visitor to the library. Please join us in recognizing and lauding her achievements over the past two decades!

New Catalog 2025

In May of 2025, the library will be going live with a new library catalog system. We are joining the Fenway Library Organization (FLO) consortium and will be migrating our catalog from Sierra to FOLIO, an open-source system that will be maintained by FLO. We will be using EBSCO’s Discovery Service (EDS) as our search interface which will search our book (both physical and virtual) collection as well as our electronic resources. This will replace our current HillSearch interface. Our interlibrary loan and course reserve systems will remain the same as they are now. While there will be no loss of functionality with the switch to FOLIO and EDS, the search interface will change dramatically. We have already started the implementation and migration processes, and test environments will be available ahead of the launch. We will disseminate more information this semester as appropriate. While we do not have an exact date for the switch to the new catalog, it will happen after graduation and before the start of summer classes. There are several reasons for this switch. Sierra is a legacy product and one that is excessively expensive. FOLIO is an open-source product with a robust community of users and developers and is more cost effective. Additionally, FLO has dedicated staff that will maintain our system and act as technical support specialists. We will also gain the support of the 11 other FLO member libraries who use FOLIO as their library services platform. Digital Innovation Grant: Music and Video Synthesis

We are pleased to announce and highlight the Music and Video Synthesis project led by Jim Bohn and Katie Elia-Shannon from Stonehill College’s Communication Department, funded by Digital Innovation Grant from the Digital Innovation Lab at the MacPháidín library. The grant will continue Bohn's investigation of video synthesis started using the Critter and Guitari EYESY from a previous Digital Innovation Grant. This time around he will be investigating the Sleepy Circuits Hypno. Elia-Shannon will then build upon Bohn's research generate video to be used in her Digital Media Production courses. Bohn will ultimately create four music videos and will document his results and process in his blog: noisefloor. Elia-Shannon will bring the research into the classroom by having her student's create and incorporate videos into their projects. We are excited to see how the project evolves over this semester and beyond and how their research helps build digital skills amongst students and across campus.
